Arm Forces Day In Iraq
January 6th is Armed Forces Day in Iraq. This festival has been celebrated every year since 1921 after the activation of the Iraqi army and is now a national holiday.
The Iraqi army has a long history. It was formed in the early 1920s but was dissolved in 2003 after the Iraq war and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime. New armed forces have been created with the help of the United States.
Since 2009, the Iraqi Armed Forces and the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior have been responsible for ensuring security and upholding law and order in Iraq.
The Iraqi armed forces report to the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defense. The armed forces comprise three sub-divisions: the Iraqi Army, the Iraqi Air Force and the Iraqi Navy. The Iraqi army is considered the most important element in the fight against insurgency. The Iraqi Air Force supports land forces with light aircraft and helicopters used to transport troops, supplies and equipment. The Iraqi navy protects the coastline and inland waterways. The Iraqi navy is also responsible for the safety of offshore oil rigs.
